Hospitality All Rounder

CHEELA PLAINS STATION STAY, in the remote outback Pilbara region of Western Australia, offers an ideal stop over between the World Heritage Listed Ningaloo Reef and Karijini National Park. The facilities include a large oval lawn with 28 campsites, 25 rooms that utilize shared amenities and 4 ensuite rooms. In addition, there are 13 wilderness campsites located at the Beasley Gorge. Meals and full catering packages are available for company staff and guests in the Red Plains Café/dining room all year round. The Red Plains Café is open from 7:30am-2:30pm daily and is a popular rest stop for passing travellers. Customers range from tourists to corporate guests from the resources sector and/or road workers. Guest attractions include 4X4 self-drive safaris, walking trails, vast 360-degree views from the epic Sunset and Cave lookouts, dark sky viewing and happy hour around the iconic Red Plains campground fire pit. The Station Stay is open to corporate guests year-round and open to tourists seasonally from April to October.

Position

Cheela Plains Station is seeking applicants to fill the positions of Hospitality All Rounders. This is a casual, full time, on-site position that requires an immediate start. The successful applicant will be “hands on” and should possess an enthusiastic, energetic and friendly personality. Experience in quality customer service is paramount. Being self-motivated, honest, and reliable with the ability to work independently or within a team environment are deemed essential attributes. The applicant must have the ability and willingness to experience the opportunity of living and working on a remote cattle station.

Duties
The duties include but are not limited to serving in the café, making lunches, cooking breakfasts, kitchen hand, maintaining a clean kitchen and dining room, allocating rooms, general cleaning of facilities, washing dishes, watering, mowing lawns and maintenance. We request flexibility in the roles as various other duties may arise you may be required for. We are open to tourists from 1 April to 31 October but remain open for corporate guests which may include mining company exploration and rehabilitation crews, road workers, etc. throughout the year.
 

Applicants must also demonstrate an ability to:

●  Assist chef to prepare meals for up to 40 guests (occasional busy times may see up to 50 guests).
●  Work in an organised and efficient manner to meet business requirements.
●  Maintain a professional and courteous manner to all guests, staff and management.
●  Communicate effectively and efficiently between management, front of house staff and our guests.
●  Adhere to Work, Health and Safety and food safety standards.
●  Maintain the kitchen and restaurant to food safety standards.

Additional skills/interests an advantage:

●  Knowledge of basic electrical and plumbing systems, general maintenance skills.
●  Experience working with mechanical equipment and power tools.
●  Previous experience working remote in similar Tourism/Hospitality.
●  Previous experience in computer systems.
●  Proven track record of attention to detail and good leadership and teamwork qualities.
●  Ability to communicate with all members of staff and guests.
●  Applied knowledge of WHS, Food Safety and HACCP regulations.
●  An interest and knowledge of the night sky.
●  An interest and knowledge of geology.

Roster

5-6 days/week, 8-10 hours/day

Accommodation/Meals

Accommodation is provided in a unit with an ensuite. Meals are supplied and on days off meals can be taken in the dining room or collected and eaten elsewhere.

Camp Host 2025

Vacancies open from Apr 1 - Oct 8, 2025 (6-8 week tenure). Offered as a volunteer/exchange position.

In addition, there are 15 wilderness campsites located at the Beasley Gorge.  The Station Stay is open to corporate guests year-round and open to tourists seasonally from April to October. The Red Plains Café is open from 7:30am-2:30pm daily and is a popular rest stop for passing travellers. Position

Camp Hosts play an important part in welcoming guests to our unique outback station stay and looking after the Red Plains campground of 28 powered and unpowered campsites. Hosts are expected to work 6 days per week and are generally rotated through 6–8-week rotations. Own caravan required.

Remuneration

  • All meals are provided as per the Staff Meal Policy.
  • Powered campsite for the agreed number of weeks.

LEADING HAND STOCKPERSON AND PASTORAL ALL ROUNDER

The position is offered as a Leading Hand Stockperson and Pastoral All-rounder for an active, honest, enthusiastic, non-smoking person in our intensive rangeland grazing system. The position includes predominately working independently in all aspects of station work. The successful applicant will be handling large numbers of stock with mob sizes between 600 to 1,000 head using low stress stock handling methods while shifting mobs of cattle on a regular basis. We handle between 3,000 and 8,000 head of cattle per year from varying clients around the state settling them into our intensive grazing system. The candidate will be required to manage all cattle husbandry, water and fencing management and maintenance.

Duties include, but not limited to:

Routine water runs and associated maintenance, cattle training, paddock moves, maintain diary of grazing periods, fencing, yard building, machinery and vehicle maintenance.

Experience/Requirements

Low stress stock handling course or experience, competent motorbike rider, rangeland or holistic experience, White Card, excellent communicator, weld, driver’s license, experience with machinery maintenance. Some machinery experience an advantage operating skid steer, 930 loader and HR license. Excellent physical fitness is essential. Non-smoker. Requires 12 to 24 months of specific experience in these roles of holistic grazing and low stress stock handling.

Chef/All Rounder Couple 2021 Season

Cheela Plains Station  has a vacancy for a chef/all rounder couple. This is a live-in, on site position. This position is full time for both applicants and will commence mid March through to the end of October. The successful couple will be “hands on” with an enthusiastic, energetic  and  friendly disposition who enjoy having fun with people. It is best if you are dynamic with initiative, hardworking and open to diverse opportunities. Experience in quality customer service is paramount. Being self motivated, honest and reliable with the ability to work independently or within a team are deemed essential attributes. The successful couple must have the ability and willingness to experience the opportunity of living and working on a remote cattle station and become part of a small multi skilled team.

Position Objective

Our roster will require one applicant  to be involved with all aspects of the Station Stay including- Office/Reception, Housekeeping, General Maintenance, Gardening, Cooking, Cleaning, serving and waiting  in our cafe and various other tasks as required. The other applicant must have Chef qualifications or be of a suitable skill level. The Chef applicant will produce good quality, well presented meals by following a set 7 day rotating menu. Daily you will be cooking for up to 15 staff and 40 guests, our Red Plains Cafe will keep you on your toes. You will be responsible for all aspects of a commercial kitchen including but not limited to - health and hygiene, maintaining food safety standards, record keeping, cleaning, ordering and receival as well as budgeting/meal costing.

Applicant Requirements

The station stay can be quite busy in all areas, both applicants must be healthy and physically fit,  we prefer non smokers. The Pilbara region can be quite hot early and late in our season, therefore the importance of being able to work in hot environments for extended periods of time will be essential.

The Chef/All Rounder may be required to fill in for the Station Stay managers whilst they are on break, covering all aspects of station stay management during this time. 

All staff must maintain their personal presentation and hygiene to professional standards at all times.

All staff shall abide by the guidelines set out in the Employee Induction Handbook and ensure compliance with the WHS induction manual.

Camp Host 2021 Season

Welcome to Cheela Plains Station and thank you for volunteering to assist us in making our visitors feel welcome. The camp host position is a volunteer role and is not a paid position. Your work is very much appreciated, and we hope you enjoy your time here at the station. Our campground has up to 28 sites, surrounding a green grass oval, with trees for shade and a combination of unpowered and powered sites. The campground is a friendly oasis set on the edge of the red plains. Telstra coverage is available on the café lawn.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Welcome guests and supervise guest parking as needed. Please ensure that guests park in their allocated bay and check with reception before allowing anyone to move site, as it may be pre booked.
  • Please bag ice from the ice machine and place in the freezer for sale, as needed.
  • Please check campsites each morning and pick up “micro rubbish” such as  bread clips, bottle tops, etc.
  • Look for ants around the campground grass oval and spray nests as soon as possible, before 9am or after 5pm, when the ants are active.
  • Please water the young trees, mow, whipper-snip and water the grass oval, grass courtyard and café lawn.
  • Tip run as required, this may be daily during peak season.

Campfire

  • Please take ownership of the campfire. Set and light the fire in the evening.
  • Please use the wheelbarrow to move the day’s allocation of wood from the wood pile to the campfire area.
  • Clean hotplate and rake the campfire area daily, empty ash weekly. 
  • Organize wood collection using the station vehicle, assist in collecting firewood once per week or as needed.  Please monitor the wood consumption and ration so that the wood lasts all week. 
  • Enjoy evenings at the campfire talking with guests. Please promote cuppa & cake or dinner in our café and self-drive tours of our station gorges.

Log Hut (Red Plains Camp Kitchen and Amenities)

  • Friday to Wednesday Please clean the camp kitchen 6 days per week , refill sink detergent, wipe out fridge, clean BBQ. Check gas bottles and notify reception if gas is getting low.
  • Friday to Wednesday: Please clean the Red Plains campground amenities at around 10am.
  • Wednesdays: Please set up a servery, cook, collect tickets and help clean up on Wednesday Burger Night.  (collect pre-prepared Burger Night kit from kitchen), with help from Managers.

1st Aid

  • Please report any 1st Aid to a manager/Station owner as soon as possible.  We have an RFDS kit at the homestead.

Complementary Benefits During Your Voluntary Time at Cheela Plains Station 

  • Staff uniform shirts x 3. One to keep upon departure, pending minimum 6 week tenure. Please ensure your work shirt is presentable daily and if performing painting, vehicle servicing,  etc. Please change to old clothing to protect the uniform.
  • Powered campsite for the agreed number of weeks (up to 6 weeks). A 4 to 6 week rotation is preferable for a camp host as we feel getting away for a break keeps you fresh for a positive customer experience. A roster will be negotiated such as 6 weeks on/6 weeks off.
  • Free personal access to station gorges.
  • Pre-approval is required by management prior to travelling around the station with or without guests. 
  • Complimentary meal at the social evenings/special events/Wednesday Burger Nights.
  • Free ice for personal use.
  • Free use of the washing machine.
  • We will give you a $50 Coles Gift Card, every 7 days, to contribute towards breakfast and evening meals.
  • Staff Morning Tea and Lunch are provided in the café.
  • Thursday is your day off. Please enjoy the station or a day out in town.
